Personal work.

I wanted this image to imply a subtle emotional moment. I feel there are several stories that could be drawn out of the image, but what I had in mind when I began was that this was a moment of mourning for the wife of a great shogun, who's armor returned from war without him.

Yoritomo Hotako spent her early life as a prodigious pirate. Eventually she transformed into something altogether more deadly.

I've always thought that there was something unnerving, and a touch mystical, about having covered eyes. With this image, I was experimenting with juxtaposing covered eyes with a bare torso. I wanted a shell of dark, hard, sharp elements to surround the flesh, yet leaving the softest of her exposed. This is a character who has profited greatly from abandoning the gods, instead seizing mastery of sorcery through blood rituals. I wanted to portray a dangerous seductiveness about her.
